HELLO MY LOVELY BADASS GAMER FRIENDS!Just giving you the heads up that my big "Celebrity Guest" feature article is on Kotaku.com RIGHT MEOW!!! So you should check it out. And leave some nice comments, because I'm certain there will be TONS of mean comments from people tearing me apart. (You know how picky gamers love to say "I'm sorry, but I disagree" in response to EVERY video game article EVER written.)
So, hey, be a pal and check it out! :)
Read your article this morning and I must say you did a really great job * insert Final Fantasy Victory Theme* I did read the comments that were given and most of them were really civilized, I saw a few that complained. Not about the content, but about the length. I lol'd at them thinking, "If only they understood your passion." Cause I think, if given a chance, you could have almost written a small book. lol and I'd buy that book too lol. Anyways great job and I hope to see more of your work on Kotaku.
ReplyDeleteAre you a semi-regular columnist over there or something, Because it's clearly not the first time I've seen your name crop up there :P
ReplyDeleteIn fairness though, if you were going to have it that games would destroy a classic like Casablanca, you could have at least put Activision on the front of it, they've made the worst movie tie-ins I've ever played (yes, original Ghostbusters game, I'm clearly referring to you). I'll copy and paste what I said on the Big K in case you missed it:
(replying to a guy about the MGS4 ending) - You think that's bad? I'll admit it had me at the midpoint of Act 4 after fending off the Suicide Gekko with the rail gun. Man that was a powerful scene, but I'll not spoil it fo anyone who hasn't played it yet.
Final Fantasy X had me in its grip as well. Good times.
But as was pointed out earlier, it's all down to the person that's playing it. You don't feel the same watching it from the sidelines but when it's you that's had the controller in your hand, you've the one fighting their struggles, it just makes it more endearing to you. Unless the characters are complete douchebags like inFamous and Prototype. I've yet to finish either because of that.
@gamingbuddha Someone complained about the length?! HAHAHA!!!!!! If they only knew. FACT: My article was about 1,500 words. Most Kotaku features are between 1,500 AND....WAIT FOR IT....16,000. That's right. I've seen a few Kotaku ramblings go on for 20 pages (according to Microsoft Word). Talk about not being able to please anybody! Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, glad you guys liked my article. ;)
@James -- I was featured on Kotaku once before here: http://kotaku.com/5394818 But this is the first thing I've actually written for Kotaku. However, Brian Crecente (Editor-In-Chief) asked me today if I'd like to write more. :) Woo!
Well I figured that much out by myself, that's how I found this little neck of the internet after all. Just I decided that I liked some of the opinions so I thought I'd stick around. The few that complain about the length are primarily the ones bashing Tim Rogers (like what happened earlier in the week). Now his articles, no matter how much I like them, sometimes you really do need a CliffsNotes book on what points he's trying to get across. That being said though he's an excellent writer.
ReplyDeleteGood to know we'll be seeing more of you over there as well, so the haters better get used to seeing you around.
A very nice read, bringing together my two favorite topics. Games, and movies!
ReplyDeleteNow that I think of it, reading your article reminded me of what Hiedo Kojima said in an interview. Something about about bridging the gap between games and movies and how people react. If I remember right he wanted to be a movie director instead of making video games. Anyways he also said that one day video games will be that you cant tell if its a game your playing or its a movie.
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteReally nice article, I enjoyed the content, but it kind of felt you made one point then contradicted it..? I don't mean this at all in a 'fail' kind of way, however, you were saying they use different approaches to evoke emotions and engage players, but then you conclude by saying they are on the same playing field, noting at similarities? Sorry so I'm confused and I'll just ask straight up. You say comparatively, they both have the SAME power to evoke different feelings, they just do it using different means? (and thusly you don't think one is better than the other?)
@Scoutski I see what you are trying to get at, but if you read carefully, there isn't a contradiction. The article was not proving a point saying "one does it better than the other," it was an analyzation of how each art form goes about affecting people a different way. The ending was simply stating that with today's miraculous technology and ever-improving game scripts, they are both reaching, or have reached according to some, an even ground. They GET to this even ground in different ways, which was what the article was explaining/delving into. There is no contradiction because I wasn't proving a single point. I was analyzing. I was analyzing how movies do it vs. how games do it, and simply stating at the end how fascinating it is that they *both* are connecting with humans so well in this present day. Make sense? :) I wanted to go into comparing each similarity, but I simply ran out of time. I needed to keep the article to a certain word count, so I focused on the main idea of analyzing each art form. Hope that answers your question! :)
ReplyDelete(Also, as you mentioned, I chose NOT to take a personal stand and say one was better than the other. I was trying to stay away from expressing my own personal opinion which would inevitably result in a hardcore Kotaku reader argument. Haha.)
Uncharted 2 was really good at bridging the gap between films and games.
ReplyDeleteThere was often a point where I'd still be watching the end of a cut scene, wondering why Nathan was standing still, then realising that I was back in control of him again. The characters were their own too, which helped.
Great post again, good job. /clap
